There’s an unspoken question that underlies all of the fantastic reuse projects in this magazine: why wouldn’t you? If you can take a 50-year-old eight-storey concrete frame and turn it into one of London’s most fashionable hotels, as Orms has done at The Standard, why wouldn’t you? If you can take an underused multistorey car park and turn it into a city-centre arts venue, as Featherstone Young has at Ty Pawb in Wrexham, why wouldn’t you? Space House in London, which has just been remodelled as a state-of-the- art workspace by Squire & Partners, contains 16,500m3 of concrete, equivalent to about 10,000 tonnes of embodied carbon. Why would you not want to retain and reuse that?
