Concrete Futures lecture: Embracing ecological principles in infrastructure design

Recorded:Monday 12 June 2023
Presented by:Elaine Toogood, Director, Architecture & Sustainable Design, The Concrete Centre

This webinar showcases The Mumbles Sea-Hive project in Wales, a recent example of academia, industry and local community working together to enhance the aesthetics and biodiversity of sea flood defences through the development of durable, low carbon, beautiful and nature enhancing concrete tiles.

The marine ecologists and concrete manufacturer collaborating on the project will present their work together, including an explanation of how the concrete is manufactured and their development of eco-marine mix designs.

Following the presentations, the winner and runners up of Design Concrete 2023 will be announced. Design Concrete is a national student competition which encourages architecture students to explore the benefits of designing sustainably with concrete.  The challenge was to create a sustainable concrete structure within a former quarry, providing a platform for biodiversity and opportunities for visitors to engage with and learn about the natural and geological environment.
