Ferrocement is a thin, compound material that can be easily curved for multiple relatively lightweight applications. It is strong, airtight, lightweight and thin, with a high degree of formability and is suitable for many building applications. This seminar will introduce the ferrocement technology and discuss the benefits its use can bring to a project. A case study will then be presented from a member of a project team that has used this material which will illustrate in more detail its many advantages. Although the technology to form ferrocement is established, it is not very well know, but it allows engineers to create innovative and unique structures in concrete. This seminar will explain how and why. Michael Pemberton of Trafalgar Marine Technology Ltd will discuss the history of ferrocement, and will be followed by Bruce Martin of Expedition, the structural engineer team for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre Roof. Bruce will present a case study on this project which is currently under construction.
