The Concrete Centre and UK Concrete took a stand at Futurebuild 2023. Our presence on the Innovation Trail enabled visitors to pick up copies of the latest guidance, see real-life examples of the innovations available for low carbon concrete and speak to technical staff who answered queries on the latest advancements.
Futurebuild 2023: Specifying Low Carbon Concrete
The standard for concrete, BS 8500, is about to be revised and this update will considerably increase the range of low carbon concrete available for all concrete applications. Gareth provided guidance on how to specify low carbon concrete, including the use of multi-components cements using limestone.
Research, development and innovation into new low carbon cements and concretes is also prevalent. Noushin discussed recovered fly ash, calcined clays, optimisation of binder content, performance specification and the BSi Flex standard project as well as an overview of other binder technologies.
For the Q&A Gareth and Noushin were joined by Jenny Burridge, Director, Structural Design at The Concrete Centre, who brought expertise in material efficient design to the panel.
Futurebuild 2023: Innovations in Precast Concrete
Precast concrete is simultaneously at the cutting edge of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and utilising the inherent, proven performance benefits of concrete. These benefits can be relied on to deliver safe, sustainable buildings that are resilient to fire, flood and protect occupants from the impacts of climate change, such as rising temperatures. This session featured a case study, and also looked at the latest innovations in production, digitisation and product development.

Futurebuild 2023: Resilient and Low Carbon Masonry Homes
The majority of new housing in the UK is constructed using brick and block. Detailed design and specification continues to evolve to meet Building Regulations and the carbon reduction requirements of the Future Homes Standard 2025.
In this session the speakers explained how, and also took a look at some of the innovative products and construction techniques to deliver greater energy efficiency and low embodied and whole life carbon performance.
