Structural Concrete Competition 2020

The competition offers a stimulating and fun challenge to students, while supporting the curricula of civil and structural engineering departments of UK universities.

  • Opportunity to present your work to prospective employers, some of whom are involved in setting and judging the competition
  • Chance to enhance your portfolio for prospective employers
  • Gain familiarity with current design practises
  • Develop skills in communication, planning and project management, effective distribution of work and collaboration.
  • A chance to win up to £1250 for your team.

Because it is so flexible, Structural Concrete 2020 can easily be incorporated into existing university curricula, with content that reflects an independent project, a group project or a module assessment run over the first, second or both semesters of the academic year.

The 2020 project is a high-rise residential building in a waterside redevelopment area in a regional city centre. The building is to provide two storeys of retail area with studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments above, together with four two-storey penthouse apartments. Entrants must respond as if they are part of the consultant’s team.

A scheme is to be developed for a 22-storey residential tower in the waterside redevelopment area of a regional city centre. The building has a one-storey basement and two storeys of retail area at ground and first floor. The residential tower consisting of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments comes off a podium deck at level 2. One face of the tower is sloping up to Level 18. Level 18 is a garden level with a smaller four-storey block rising from the garden level housing the two-storey penthouse apartments.

Local level:

The competition will operate at two levels. All submissions made at each university will first be judged locally by the academic tutor(s) involved with the project. The winning submission from each university should be entered for the national level of the competition by the tutor.

Only one entry from each university can go forward for final judging at a national level.

National level

The winning entry from each participating university will be judged at national level using the following generic assessment criteria:

  • Compliance with the project brief
  • Safety, function, stability and robustness
  • Buildability, constructability and maintainability
  • Speed of construction and cost effectiveness
  • Imagination, flair, aesthetic appreciation and innovation.

The winning entry from each university will receive a prize of £250. The winning entry will go forward to compete at national level.

The judges may decide on joint prizes in which case the above prize money will be divided up by the judging panel at its discretion. A detailed breakdown of the awards received can be found in the awards section of the brief

Due to the ongoing situation around the Covid-19 pandemic, we have adjusted the deadlines for both the entry forms and the final projects to be received.

We have extended both deadlines by three weeks, so the deadline for final Entry Forms to be received is Friday 3rd July 2020 and the revised deadline for the completed work to be submitted is Friday 31st July 2020. We hope that this additional time will allow work that was started at university to be completed whilst remote-working.

Please send final entries electronically as a pdf (to as the judging will be handled remotely.
