Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are an established way of reducing the embodied carbon of concrete in manufacture today but the availability, use and standards related to their use is evolving. This session explains new opportunities and recent initiatives for greater and alternative uses of limestone, calcined clays, recycled concrete fines and stock-piled fly ash.

This session is presented by Gareth Wake, director, British Ready-Mixed Concrete Association, MPA. Gareth's main focus at the MPA is promoting ready-mixed concrete as a sustainable and resilient construction material as well as supporting sector working groups and academia to help enable their work to be applicable to industry and standards. He is the Chair of the BSI committee for Concrete, the sub-committee for Concrete Production and Testing, and convener and technical author for the British Standard for concrete, BS 8500.
