‘Maintain’ and ‘refurbish’ are first in the hierarchy of actions to improve circularity in the built environment. And since around half the embodied carbon of a building can be in the structural frame, its reuse also equates to carbon savings in a project. The durability of concrete, particularly in a mild environment like the inside of a building, offers opportunity for use and reuse over many decades.

The presentations in this in-person seminar provide information and technical advice for engineers and architects considering the refurbishment, reuse and modifications to existing concrete frames, including advice on assessment. Exemplar case studies featured in the talks include 160 Old Street and The Standard Hotel.

There will be a short prize-giving ceremony at the beginning of the seminar for the winners of The Concrete Centre Structural Concrete 2022 competition, sponsored by Laing O'Rourke
