Material efficient concrete frames

Date:Monday 16 June 2025
Time:12:30 - 13:30
Price:Free

This webinar will cover key considerations for structural engineers aiming to achieve material efficient concrete frame designs in their building projects. It will look at how different design criteria such as loading, spans and frame type influence the material efficiency and embodied carbon of a structure. The webinar will include worked examples using resources available from The Concrete Centre, including 'Concept’, a free spreadsheet-based tool.

This webinar is presented by Emily Halliwell, senior structural engineer at The Concrete Centre. Emily is a chartered member of the IStructE and ICE as well being a chartered environmentalist with a focus on promoting material efficient and sustainable concrete designs.

Session includes:

  • Discussion of key criteria to consider to achieve material efficient structures
  • Guidance on using Concept - a free tool from The Concrete Centre, which enables users to quickly develop and compare concrete frames
  • Worked examples showing comparisons of embodied carbon, cost and construction time for different concrete frame options

Intended for:

  • Practicing and chartered engineers looking to improve material efficiency on projects
  • Structural engineering students looking to learn about sustainable concrete structures
  • Architects wanting to understand how early design decisions on structural grids and layout impact embodied carbon
