Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Guernsey

This striking development by Nightingale Associates is being
hailed as one of the most advanced uses of precast concrete seen on
the island of Guernsey. The completed building, known as John Henry
Court, is part of a wider scheme at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital
site and replaces current nurses' accommodation. Providing this
contemporary, high quality accommodation is a key incentive in an
attempt to attract much needed nursing staff to Guernsey.
The building responds to the constraints of constructing on
the island by utilising offsite manufacturing processes and dry fix
cladding systems. The building's superstructure is constructed
using precast concrete products manufactured on the mainland,
shipped across to the island and craned into position on
site.
The cross wall system was manufactured by Histon Concrete
products with the floor planks being manufactured by
Bison. The overall manufacturing, shipping and erection was
managed, overseen and procured by Quadro services.
"This has proved that [such a system] can be used somewhere
like Guernsey," Street said. "We met a lot of opposition from the
contractor because of the need for shipping." He added that the
final result was a low-maintenance, contemporary building with
superior acoustics. "This is important because some nurses are
sleeping while others are working," he said.
The precast concrete walls have been finished to a class C
standard as prescribed in BS 8110 and left exposed within the
interior of the building. This has played an important part in
achieving a contemporary, low maintenance interior where natural
products are visible and enhance the quality of the space.
