Structural Systems UK Ltd have recently completed the
post-tensioning to 84,000m2 of floor slab at the £200m
New Romford Hospital. Post-tensioned slabs were selected for
economy, speed of construction and future flexibility. The ability
to form holes through the structure during the 30 year PFI
franchise was of great importance and SSL have developed an
innovative, patented steel shear head to permit the coring of up to
four penetrations at each internal column.
Additional benefits include deflection control, particularly
relevant on the 3m cantilevers around the circular ward towers
which were achieved with 300m thick PT slabs. The two-storey
podiums have 250mm thick PT slabs spanning the 8.1m square grid.
All slabs met the vibration and acoustic requirements.
