Maggie's Centre, London
Maggie's Centre, London, a cancer
care centre designed by Richard Rogers' practice Rogers
Stirk Harbour & Partners, is winner of the 2009 RIBA
Stirling Prize.
Located at Charing Cross Hospital,
Hammersmith, Maggie’s Centre was designed to contrast with the main
hospital building and become a welcome retreat for those affected
by cancer: patients, family members or friends.
The centre’s columns, ceiling and floors are
all of a high-quality exposed concrete, increasing the thermal mass
capacity and enabling the natural moderation of the peaks and
troughs of temperature creating a sanctuary for cancer
sufferers.
The main concrete structural frame was erected
with cast in situ, fair-faced concrete columns supporting four
separate first floor slabs and a central portal frame to support
the roof.
The use of structural concrete and blockwork
walls delivers high-quality acoustic performance that has proved
key in creating a comfortable environment for patients, staff and
visitors alike.
